AstraZeneca's acquisition of Viagra (sildenafil citrate) has left many with what is likely to be a disappointing return to the world of pharmaceuticals, in terms of sales.
The company announced that it has agreed to acquire Pfizer Inc's impotence treatment, Revatio, from US-based Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd for about US$5.5 billion, up from an initial estimate of around $1.8 billion.
The deal, which is expected to be completed in the second half of this year, will include a licensing and manufacturing rights deal between the two companies and will allow the two companies to jointly develop and commercialise each other's products in the same way as Pfizer had with Viagra.
The two companies will co-develop their own versions of Viagra and will also have their patents in place to protect their market share, the AstraZeneca news service said.
The deal is expected to be completed in the first half of this year and will include further acquisitions of Upjohn Company and Warner-Lambert.
The sale of the pharmaceuticals group's impotence treatment, Revatio, is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The deal will include a license deal with Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, which is the current CEO of Upjohn and a royalty attached to its product in the US.
